An accomplished tenor saxophonist, from
the mid-80s onwards Whalum has found a lucrative niche playing smooth jazz.
Raised in Memphis, he began playing in his father's church choir before
graduating to jazz during high school. He formed his own band while studying
at Texas Southern University in Houston, and received his first break when
opening for pianist Bob
James one evening.
From the jazz purist
standpoint, Kirk Whalum 's career has thus far been a consistent
disappointment. Although obviously a talented player, he has thus far been
satisfied to make a good living by performing R&B and pop music while
keeping well hidden any individuality that he might possess. Whalum debuted on
record for Columbia in 1984 (on a Bob James record) and has been a popular
attraction ever since. His album roster includes And You Know That! (1988),
Cache (1993), Colors (1997), and Joy Intersound (1999). Unconditional was
released on Warner Brothers in fall 2000, Best Of Compliation in 2002 and now
Into My Soul.
